Dubliners have been waiting a long time for this.

The Luas Cross City launches in Dublin on Saturday afternoon, with safety warnings issued to pedestrians in the capital.

Transdev, the company that operates the Luas, has warned pedestrians that trams will be operating through the busiest parts of the city centre every three minutes at peak times.

The first passengers on the extended service will be able to use the trams from 2pm on Saturday afternoon.

In its first year, Transdev expects more than 10 million extra journeys to be taken.

The Luas Cross City connects the Green Line at St. Stephen’s Green to the Red Line, which cuts through O’Connell Street on Abbey Street.

The new service loops around the busiest parts of the city centre, while it also extends out to Cabra on Dublin’s north-side.

Trips will cost €1 off-peak city centre journeys in the first 12 months.
