“Why in God’s name does it take the death of a 29-year-old woman with her whole life in front of her, to get to this?”

Lyra McKee’s funeral was held in Belfast on Wednesday, and all of the biggest politicians from Ireland and the UK were in attendance.

Leo Varadkar, Mary Lou McDonald, Arlene Foster, Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May were among the many that attended the funeral service in St. Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast.

Lyra’s sister Nichola spoke beautifully at the service, and received a standing ovation for her words, as did priest Martin Magill.

Magill directly addressed the politicians who were in attendance, saying: “I commend our political leaders for standing together in Creggan on Good Friday. I am however left with a question. Why in God’s name does it take the death of a 29-year-old woman with her whole life in front of her, to get to this point?”

Take a look at the powerful videos below:

Many people in attendance at the funeral turned up in Harry Potter attire, specifically Hufflepuff scarves, as per the request of Lyra’s partner.
