Man in his 40s dies following fatal assault in Westmeath

An incident room has been established at Athlone Garda Station.

Gardaí say they are continuing to appeal for information following the fatal assault of a man in his 40s that occurred on Saturday (13 August) in Westmeath.

In particular, Gardaí wish to speak with anyone who may have been at the taxi rank waiting area on Church Street in Athlone between 2.15am and 3am on Saturday morning.

Anyone who may have provided assistance to the injured party is asked to make contact with An Garda Síochána.

On top of this, Gardaí are seeking to identify the owners of vehicles parked in the area and drivers who drove through Church Street during the same time frame who may have witnessed the incident.

Anyone with video or dashcam footage is requested to make it available to the investigation team.

Meanwhile, a post-mortem has been scheduled to place later on Saturday at Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinasloe.

A Garda spokesperson said the results of the examination will determine the course of the investigation.

A man in his 40s has died following a fatal assault in Westmeath in the early hours of Saturday (13 August).

In a statement, a Garda spokesperson said the man was discovered with serious injuries at Church Street in Athlone at around 2.35am after a public order incident.

He was then taken to Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinasloe in Galway where he was later pronounced dead.

Gardaí say that the office of the State Pathologist has been notified and that a post-mortem examination will be arranged.

An incident room has also been established at Athlone Garda Station under the direction of a Senior Investigating Officer.

No arrests have been made as of yet and Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

“Any person who may have any video footage of this incident, including mobile phone footage, or any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Church Street area between 2am and 2.45am are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí,” the spokesperson said.
