Man in his 50s dies following hit-and-run in Cavan

Gardaí are appealing for anyone aware of a vehicle with unexplained damage in Cavan to come forward.

Gardaí are investigating a fatal hit-and-run incident involving a male pedestrian that occurred in Cavan.

Shortly after 12pm on Friday (19 August), the body of a man in his 50s was discovered by a road user along the N3 near Billis Bridge in the townland of Ballyjamesduff.

It is understood the incident occurred sometime between 10pm on Thursday, 18 August and 12pm on the Friday.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene and the man was pronounced dead, with his body then taken to the mortuary at Cavan General Hospital.

A Garda spokesperson said that, following an examination of the area, it was identified that the man was struck by a vehicle that failed to remain at the scene.

Gardaí in Bailieboro are now appealing for anyone with information in relation to this incident to come forward, as well as anyone who is aware of a vehicle with unexplained damage in the wider Cavan area.

On top of this, Gardaí are urging any road users who were on the N3 in Ballyjamesduff between 10pm on Thursday and 12pm on Friday and who observed any unusual activity in the area to make contact with them.

Any drivers who may have camera footage, including dashcam footage, who were travelling in the area between these hours are also asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
