Church collection stolen in Cork

Ah here.

A man in his 50s has been arrested and charged in relation to five incidents of theft at churches in Cork.

Gardaí in Midleton were alerted to the incidents and after reviewing CCTV footage, observed a man fishing envelopes out of a church donation box.

As part of the investigation, Gardaí carried out a surveillance operation on 25 January at a church in Carrigtwohill.

As Gardaí attempted to arrest the man, he fled the scene in a car and travelled on the N25.

Gardaí pursued the car and he eventually stopped the car near the Jack Lynch Tunnel, where Gardaí searched him and the vehicle, finding a wire hook in his possession.

The man was arrested and brought to Cobh Garda Station, where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

He has since been charged and is due to appear before Mallow District Court on Tuesday morning (26 January) at 10.30am.
