Man arrested following fatal assault at Kerry funeral

Investigating Gardaí continue to appeal for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

A man has been arrested by Gardaí investigating a fatal assault that occurred in Kerry on Wednesday morning (5 October).

Gardaí and emergency services attended the grounds of Rathass Cemetery in Tralee following reports of an altercation involving a group of people.

A man in his 40s was discovered with serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by ambulance personnel.

The victim has been named locally as Thomas Dooley and his body was taken to University Hospital Kerry.

A woman in her 40s was also transferred to the same hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to multiple reports, Dooley was attacked during a funeral.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, a man in his 30s was arrested in Cork and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Tralee Garda Station.

A Garda spokesperson also said that a post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out at University Hospital Kerry later on Thursday morning.

Investigating Gardaí continue to appeal for witnesses to the incident to come forward and for any person with camera footage to make it available to them.
