Man arrested over Belfast car bomb attack outside police station

BREAKING.

PSNI detectives said that the 66-year-old was arrested in the Dunmurry area this morning.

He was arrested under the Terrorism Act and has been detained for questioning.

The PSNI added that a number of searches are still ongoing around the Belfast area.

The bomb went off outside Dunmurry Police Station, southwest of Belfast city centre on Saturday.

The investigation is ongoing and police have urged anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said: "Please be assured that we will continue, tirelessly, with our efforts to bring those responsible to justice and to protect our local communities."

The New IRA claimed responsibility for the incident.

The New IRA have added that they will target the homes of PSNI officers.

In a statement from the 'leadership of the IRA', the group threatened anyone who provides information to the PSNI saying they will be 'severely dealt with'.

No one was injured in Saturday's attack after a delivery driver was hijacked in the Twinbrook area at around 10.50pm.

A gas cylinder was placed in the car before the driver was ordered to take the bomb to the police station where it exploded.

“The intention was to kill police coming out of the station," the group said.

“This was not an attack on the station, it was an attack aimed at police leaving the station.”
