A very shocking story.

An arrest has been made in the sexual assault investigation involving a Hacienda HealthCare patient who gave birth last month, Phoenix police announced Wednesday.

A report by local news source KTAR News revealed that the suspect is 36-year-old Nathan Sutherland, “a licensed practical nurse who was responsible for caring for the victim during the time the alleged sexual assault occurred.”

The case had originally made global headlines as the woman involved was severely incapacitated and unable to consent to any such action.

The medical professionals who had been taking care of the woman were not aware that she was pregnant. After the baby was born, DNA swabs were taken from male professionals at the hospital.

It was originally reported that the woman, whose name has not been made public, was in a vegetative state. It was later confirmed that the woman has some use of her limbs, but is severely intellectually disabled, and non-verbal. She is able to respond to sound, and make facial gestures.

KTAR has reported that the baby is out of the hospital and doing well.
