The PSNI are appealing for witnesses.

A 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman in her 50s died following a car fire in Derry.

The incident occurred at an address on the Quarry Road area of Knockloughrim on Tuesday (12 October).

At around 5.40am, the PSNI received a report of a car on fire outside a house on the road.

Emergency services attended the scene and the woman who was in the car was taken to hospital for treatment.

However, despite the best efforts of hospital staff, the PSNI have said she succumbed to her injuries and died in hospital on Tuesday evening.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team have launched a murder investigation, with the 59-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder.

He has also been taken to hospital for treatment for burn injuries.

Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell said his investigation is at a “very early stage”.

“I would appeal to anyone who was on the Quarry Road early [Tuesday] morning and who witnessed anything to contact detectives on 101 quoting reference 227 12/10/21.”
