Man dies, another in serious condition, following car crash in Louth
Tragic news from Louth.
An Garda Síochána have since confirmed that a man in his 70s has passed away following a road traffic collision in Co. Louth earlier on Thursday.
Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of the incident - the R178 Carrickmacross Road - shortly after 3pm today. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man who was driving the second vehicle, a van, has been airlifted to Tallaght Hospital, where his condition is understood to be serious. He is believed to be in his 40s.
A boy in his mid-teens was a passenger in the car of the deceased at the time of the crash, and he has been brought to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
The scene is currently preserved and Garda forensic collision investigators have been requested to examine the crash site. Local traffic diversions are expected to remain in place overnight on the R178 between Ballykelly and Essexford.
Gardaí are now looking witnesses to come forward and are also appealing to those with dash cam footage to make it available to investigators.
