Authorities are working to identify the man.

The body of a man who had been sleeping rough has been found in Dublin city centre.

According to Gardaí in Pearse Street, authorities were alerted after the deceased man was discovered by a homeless organisation on St Andrew’s Street, south of the Liffey, early on the morning of Tuesday, January 9.

According to homeless charity A Lending Hand, it is the first incidence of a rough sleeper dying on Irish streets in 2024.

The death of the man comes after Met Éireann issued a status yellow low temperature warning, with temperatures dropping as low as -5C in some parts of the country. Conditions are set to remain freezing throughout the coming week.

A spokesperson for the Department of Housing said: “This is a tragedy and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends of the individual concerned.

“In September the Department asked all Regional Leads to ensure that cold weather arrangements are in place throughout the country.

“Cold Weather Initiatives operate across all local authorities to provide additional emergency beds for rough sleepers where needed and ensure that additional temporary beds can be brought into use across a range of existing services and facilities, for singles and couples as needed during periods of cold weather.”

The public are encouraged to report rough sleeping and to download the DRHE’s Rough Sleeper app.

Figures from 2023 show that around 120 people have been sleeping rough on Dublin streets through the winter months, with the capital having the highest number of homeless adults at nearly 6,800, almost two-thirds of them single.
