The tragic incident occurred at an Italian airport yesterday

A man who was sucked into a plane engine and killed in Italy yesterday has been named by his local mayor

Andrea Russo, a 35-year-old builder from the Calcinate county in Bergamo, was killed instantly after running towards a Volotea aircraft that had been taxiing on an airport tarmac.

Local media are reporting that Russo broke into the Milan Bergamo Il Caravaggio International Airport by driving the wrong way down a road before leaving his car and then heading into the terminal.

Security forces were apparently unable to stop him as he raced across the tarmac towards an Airbus A319 Volotea aircraft that was about to leave for Asturias, in Spain.

Local prosecutor Maurizio Romanelli told reporters: “We are investigating about possible relationships with the airport or the world of planes.”

“In the car with which he arrived at the airport, heaps of all kinds of material were found but we couldn’t find anything that could give any kind of explanation.”

The incident occurred at 10.20am yesterday and led to the suspension of eight flights at the airport as staff attempted to deal with the shocking situation.
