A man armed with a sword and three knives was apprehended by police after trying to enter Leinster House this afternoon, according to reports.
According to The Irish Independent, a Garda sustained minor injuries after the man armed with the weapons attempted to enter Leinster House through the main gates at approximately 4.35pm.
The man in question, who was believed to have been concealing two weapons in his shoes while carrying another, was apprehended by officers at Leinster House and taken to Pearse Street Station, where he was to face questioning.
The motive of the man in question remains unclear, but Leinster House would not have been as busy as usual today, with TDs and Senators not due to return from their Easter Break until tomorrow.
UPDATE: An Garda Siochána have since released a statement about the incident which read: “Gardai in Pearse Street have arrested a male (19 yrs) on suspicion of possession of offensive weapon at Leinster House on the 29th April. The incident occurred at approximately 4.30pm, the male was arrested on the front plinth of Leinster House (Kildare St Side).
“He was taken to Pearse St Garda Station and is being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 as amended. He was arrested in possession of offensive weapons. No one was injured in the incident.”
