Five people stabbed at shopping centre in Manchester

A man has been arrested on suspicion of the attack.

Five people have been stabbed at a shopping centre in Manchester on Friday afternoon.

The stabbings took place at the Arndale shopping centre in in the middle of Manchester.

A man in his 40s has been arrested at the scene on suspicion of the serious assault.

“We can confirm that five people have been stabbed and taken to hospital,” Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.

“In these early stages we are keeping an open mind about the motivation of this terrible incident and the circumstances as we know them.

“Given the location of the incident and its nature, officers from Counter Terrorism Police North West are leading the investigation as we determine the circumstances.”

The shopping centre was evacuated as armed police rushed to the scene.

It is believed that one of the victims suffered “serious” injuries, while counter-terror officers have said they were “keeping an open mind” regarding the situation.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted that he was “shocked by the incident”.
