Will this Winter ever end?

A few overdue days of decent weather might have given you the impression that spring had finally arrived in Ireland, but we all best get ready for winter to return with a vengeance.

For the best part of the next week, temperatures will rarely, if ever, rise to double figures while regularly dropping below zero, with Met Éireann warning of “exceptionally cold” conditions and widespread wintry showers by early next week.

The cold spell will start this weekend, with temperatures rising no higher than 8 degrees during the afternoon on Friday and dropping to as low as -1 at night.

Saturday and Sunday will be even colder still, with lows of -2 and -3 on Saturday and Sunday night respectively, with a widespread sharp to severe frost.

Met Éireann say the unseasonably cold conditions can be attributed to a high pressure over Scandinavia and forecast temperatures turning progressively colder from Tuesday, when temperatures will hover around freezing even during daylight hours.

In better news, before wintry showers become widespread early next week, the weekend will be mostly dry with plenty of sunny spells, so it’ll be quite pleasant to be out and about in, if you can bear the cold, of course.

March will have arrived by the end of next week so regardless of your take on the seasons, winter will finally be over, although we’re not getting our hopes up for suitable weather to mark the occasion.
