Stephen Porzio

The warnings will start to take effect overnight.

More counties have been issued with Status Red warnings by Met Éireann ahead of Storm Eunice hitting Ireland.

Earlier in the week, the weather forecaster said the storm has the potential to be a “multi-hazard and disruptive event” with damaging winds, heavy rain and snow possible.”

A Status Red wind warning has now been put out for Clare, Cork and Kerry and will be valid from 3am to 8am on Friday.

Meanwhile, another has been issued to Waterford and will be in effect from 7am to 11am the same day.

“Storm Eunice will track quickly over Ireland tonight and Friday morning bringing severe and damaging winds,” the Status Red warnings read.

“Southwest winds veering northwest will reach mean speeds in excess of 80 km/h with gusts in excess of 130 km/h. Some coastal flooding, especially at high tide.”

On top of the red warnings, a Status Orange snow warning for Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Mayo and Roscommon will come into effect at 3am on Friday to 3pm that afternoon.

Earlier on Thursday, the Department of Education said that because of the “extreme nature” of Storm Eunice and the threat of “multi-hazard” weather events, it is advising that schools in counties where status red wind warnings and status orange snow warnings are in place should close on Friday.

Meanwhile, another Status Orange warning for wind will be valid from 3am to 11am on Friday for Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wexford, Wicklow, Munster and Galway.

This is as a Status Yellow wind, rain and snow warning for all of Ireland will be in effect from 1am to 3pm the same day.
