Met Éireann extends two weather warnings as heavy rain set to continue

A wet one ahead.

Met Éireann has extended two weather warnings in place for Ireland on Thursday.

A Status Orange rainfall warning for Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow will now remain in place until 12pm on Thursday.

Met Éireann said that following significant accumulations of rainfall, there will be additional accumulations on Thursday morning, with flooding in places.

While a separate Status Yellow rainfall warning for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny and Cork has also been extended until 12pm on Thursday.

The forecaster said that heavy rain will continue in these areas throughout the morning.

The Road Safety Authority has called on road users to exercise caution while using the roads this morning in light of the warning.

Motorists are advised to:

  • Slow down and leave a bigger space between themselves and the vehicle in front in wet weather conditions. This is especially important on high speed roads such as dual carriageways and motorways where there is increased danger of aquaplaning.
  • If the road ahead is flooded choose another route, do not attempt to drive through it. Flooded roads that appear shallow could be deeper than you think. They may also have trees or branches that have fallen that may not be visible.
  • Road users should always follow recommended routes and obey signs closing roads to traffic.
  • After going through water, drive slowly with your foot on the brake pedal for a short distance - this helps to dry the brakes.
  • Drive with dipped headlights at all times.
