Met Éireann says there’s a risk of snow for parts of Ireland this weekend

Let it snow.

To paraphrase a poem by the great Hans Moleman “I think that I shall never see, this fog is blinding me.”

Granted, The Simpsons character who tastes like a peanut might be senile, but those words did reflect the blanket of fog that swept through many areas of the country on Thursday morning.

Thankfully, that’s set to clear by midday but there’s a chance of some sneachta arriving on Sunday, according to the latest weekend forecast from Met Éireann.

The forecaster states that Sunday will be cold with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers.

Most of the bad weather is due to arrive in Connacht, west Ulster and west Munster, with these showers turning to sleet later that evening, with a risk of snow showers, mainly over high ground in the west and north.

As for the rest of the weekend, Friday is set to be mostly cloudy and dry.

However, there could be patches of light rain and drizzle, mainly in the north and northwest during the morning.

The same conditions are expected on Saturday too, but things are expected to deteriorate on Saturday night as a band of persistent rain extends from the west.

With a risk of snowfall in place over higher ground during Sunday afternoon, Sunday night is set to be very cold too, with clear spells and scattered showers expected, most of them in the western half of the country.

Many of the showers will be wintry and there is a risk of thunder, mainly in Atlantic coastal areas.

Temperatures are expected to vary between 0 and 3 degrees, with a risk of frost and icy patches.
