Met Éireann issue status yellow fog warning for entire country

Ryan Price

The cold snap is coming to an end, but we’re not out of the woods just yet.

Met Éireann has issued a status yellow fog warning for the entire country, starting at 6pm on Saturday evening and lasting until 9am on Sunday morning.

The weather service warned that the foggy conditions will lead to impaired visibility, and that anyone planning to drive should take extra caution.

Motorists are advised to use their fog lights, but to remember to turn them off when they are not needed.

With temperatures forecast to rise this weekend, the public is being warned of dangers associated with the ensuing thaw – including burst pipes and localised flooding.

Earlier this week, 25 counties were issued with a status orange alert for low temperature and ice.

Thousands in rural areas were forced to undergo several days without electricity for heat and light.

Many experienced water shortages and thus couldn’t make tea, shower or flush toilets. Issues with mobile phone coverage also made it difficult for people to communicate with friends and family.

Some elderly people were left completely snowed in and isolated, with loved ones unable to get to them due to the treacherous conditions of roads.
