Ahead of Storm Brian…

Met Éireann have issued a status orange wind warning for seven counties as Storm Brian edges closer towards Ireland.

The wind warning has been issued for the coasts of Mayo, Galway, Clare, Kerry, Cork, Waterford and Wexford.

They warned that west to southwest winds, veering northwest, will reach mean speeds of 65-80 km/h with gusts 110-130 km/h.

It was issued at 5am on Friday morning and is valid from 3am on Saturday until 6pm on Saturday evening.

The warning follows the status yellow wind warning that was issued for the rest of Ireland, and the yellow rain warning that was issued for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Waterford.

Thousands of homes in Ireland, particularly in the south and south-west, remain without power, and this latest storm could delay repairs to damaged areas even more.

Cork County Council issued a warning of potential flooding prior to the arrival of Storm Brian.

“A tidal surge coinciding with high tides is expected to occur [Friday] evening , at 6.00pm approximately. This has the potential to cause to cause tidal flooding across low lying areas in Bantry, Clonakilty, Youghal and Midleton.”

The also urged people to avoid coastal areas, exercise extreme caution in relation to trees and structures which may have been affected by Storm Ophelia.
