Met Éireann says “heavy” rain in store for the Halloween weekend

Those trick or treating may need an umbrella.

Met Éireann has said “heavy” rain is on the cards for this Halloween weekend, with conditions over the next few days being described as “unsettled” and “wet”.

According to its current forecast, Saturday will begin a mostly bright and fresh day with sunny spells and just a few passing showers.

However, cloud will increase in the west throughout the afternoon with rain extending from the Atlantic through the evening as winds increase from fresh to strong and gusty.

Highest temperatures will range from 10 to 12 degrees.

As for later, the outbreaks of showery rain and breezy conditions will move into the southwest early on Saturday night and spread northeastwards to all regions overnight.

Met Éireann says rain will turn heavy bringing a risk of localised flooding, with lowest temperatures between 3 and 7 degrees and fresh to strong winds developing.

Meanwhile, the spooky day itself on Sunday will see showers or longer spells of rain, with some showers again heavy, though there will be sunny spells at times too.

It will be, however, quite breezy or windy in places, most likely along western coasts, as highest temperatures range from 9 to 12 degrees.

The outbreaks of showery rain will continue overnight, with the best of the dry and clear periods in the east during the early parts of the night.

There will be fresh to strong and gusty winds, with lowest temperatures between 3 and 7 degrees.

While there will be scattered showers on Monday, which will be most frequent in western and northern counties, there will be “good dry spells” elsewhere with “some sunshine” in most regions.

Meanwhile, earlier in the week, Deputy Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Ronan Glynn said during a Department of Health briefing that people can trick or treat safely this Halloween if they take “basic precautions”.
