Christmas Day weather forecast

A weather advisory is also in place.

It might be a good idea to ensure that you’ve got plenty of tea bags in the kitchen because the next few days are set to get particularly chilly with a weather advisory in place for the country.

On this note, Met Éireann has said that the cold and wintry weather will start to develop from Sunday evening.

What can we expect? Well, showers of hail, sleet and snow will occur in places tonight. Snow showers will be most frequent in Ulster and Connacht, especially on high ground.

The weather advisory is in place from 6pm on Sunday 26 January until 3pm on Tuesday 28 January.

Ok, not too bad but the general forecast for the next few days is bound to split opinions, especially if you hate the snow.

As previously stated, Sunday night will see the start of these wintry showers that are expected to spread eastwards, with some falling as sleet or snow in Connacht, Ulster and west Munster. There’s also a risk of thunder.

The mercury is set to fluctuate between -1 and +2 degrees tonight with frost and ice in some areas, so keep warm.

Moving into Monday and it’s set to be cold and blustery with sunny spells and wintry showers developing, mainly in Ulster, Connacht and west Munster. There’s a chance of some snow falling too, especially on hills and mountains.

Again, there’ll be a risk of hail and thunder. The east is expected to be mainly dry though.

As for Monday night, it’s expected to be very cold with blustery wintry showers continuing, with falls of hail, sleet and snow likely.

Again, these wintry showers are expected to be most frequent in the west, with lying snow possible. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +1 degrees.

There are no prizes for guessing what Tuesday’s conditions are shaping up to be like.

Yep, it’s set to be cold and blustery again with wintry showers developing, mainly in western areas. These showers will be a mix of rain, sleet and hail, with some snow on higher ground.

All in all, it’s going to be nippy with a strong chance of snow in some places.
