Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for five counties.

Published on Saturday afternoon, the alert applies to Carlow, Cork, Kilkenny, Waterford and Wexford

It will take effect from 11pm on Saturday and will be valid until 9am on Sunday.

“Several bands of heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected tonight (Saturday) and early tomorrow morning (Sunday), leading to spot flooding and hazardous driving conditions,” the warning reads.

Met Éireann’s national forecast says that there will be showery rain with some embedded heavy showers or thunderstorms in the south on Saturday night, with a continued risk of spot flooding.

Further north, it will be mostly dry with clear spells and patches of mist and fog to start but the heavy showery rain will extend from the south as the night goes on.

That said, northern fringes should stay mostly dry until Sunday morning as lowest temperatures of 8 to 13 degrees are expected.

Sunday morning then will be cloudy and wet over the northern half of the country with some heavy or thundery showery rain continuing.

While sunny spells will develop elsewhere, a further scattering of heavy showers is possible mostly in Munster and Connacht throughout the afternoon and evening.

Highest temperatures of 13 to 16 degrees are forecasted.

As for next week, Met Éireann’s outlook states: “Turning a bit more settled on Monday and Tuesday but from Tuesday night onwards low pressure will steer in further spells of wet and breezy weather. Staying mild.”
