Michaella McCollum Connolly has been released from prison in Peru

Paul Moore

She has spent over two-and-a-half-years in prison so far.

It’s reported that Michaella McCollum Connolly has been released from the Ancon Dos jail in Lima after being granted parole. The 23-year-old from Tyrone, along with Scottish woman Melissa Reid, was arrested in August 2013 after they were caught trying to board a plane from Lima to Madrid with 11kg of cocaine hidden inside food packet.

RTE have reported that McCollum Connolly has now left the jail in Peru, where she has been held since 2013. The pair had previously been held at Virgen de Fatima prison but were later moved to the Ancon jail, where conditions are said to be worse.

There’s still some legal issues to be sorted though she still has to attend a court hearing, where it will be decided whether she can return home immediately or if she has to spend more time in Peru.
