Sales and retail workers are well ahead of the chasing pack.

If you work in the sales and retail industry in Ireland, then you’re in good company according to the latest and final report from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) on the 2016 Census.

A report on Employment, Occupations and Industry, published on Thursday, reveals that there are 90,746 people in Ireland who classify themselves as sales and retails assistants, cashiers and checkout operators, way ahead of farmers, the second most common occupation in Ireland.

According to the Census, there were 69,375 farmers or farm workers in Ireland in 2016, accounting for 3.5% of the workforce. The next largest category was other administrative occupations with 59,392 workers, followed by nurses and midwives (53,910) care workers and home carers (44,605) and Primary and nursery education teaching professionals (41,654).

Arguably the most notable increase in occupational groups between the 2011 and 2016 censuses, meanwhile, was programmers and software development professionals, which grew by 6,873 to 20,113 workers in the last five years.
