One fatally injured as motorbike collides with pole in Westmeath

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday morning.

Gardaí are investigating a fatal traffic collision which occurred in Drumcree, Collinstown, County Westmeath on Sunday morning.

A man in his 40s was fatally injured when his motorbike collided with a pole at approximately 11am. No other vehicles were involved in the collision, which happened on a crossroads about 18km northeast of Mullingar.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been brought to the Midland Regional Mullingar, and a post mortem examination is to be conducted on Monday, 14 May.

Of the 159 fatalities on Irish roads in 2017, 20 were motorcyclists. According to the RSA, motorcyclists are six times more likely to be killed on Irish roads than any other road user.
