Motorcyclist involved in collision that killed Garda Kevin Flatley dies in hospital

The motorcyclist who was involved in the crash that claimed the life of Garda Kevin Flatley has died in hospital.

Izzet Can Berber, 50, suffered serious injuries from the collision on the R132 at Lissenhall near Swords on May 11.

He had been fighting for his life in Beaumont Hospital, however he passed from his injuries on Saturday night.

Speaking to DublinLive, his wife Caitriona said: “He passed away peacefully holding my hand on Saturday night. He was an amazing husband and even more amazing father to his son and two stepchildren.

“And we are internally grateful to all our friends and family for the support over the last three weeks, and also want to thank the doctors and nurses in ICU who did everything in their power to save him and support our family through his time there.”

Garda Kevin Flattery became the 90th officer to die in the line of duty in Ireland when he was hit by Mr Berber during the collision.

His funeral mass was held in Balbriggan on May 16, with his final resting place being Newcastle.

The service took place at the Church of St Peter and Paul and was completely filled, with several people watching on screens erected outside.
