A bag was left in an apartment building

At least three people have been injured, two of which seriously, following a violent explosion in Monaco.

As per local reports in France, the explosion happened in a residential apartment building on the Rue Révérend Père Louis Frolla near the border with France this evening (Monday, 29 June).

According to initial reports from Le Figaro, an individual was spotted on CCTV with a backpack accessing the building at the same time other people were entering, before leaving the bag and fleeing.

The man remains at large and is reported to have headed in the direction of a neighbouring town, Beausoleil.

The incident happened at around 21:00 local time (20:00 BST)

The Monegasque government confirmed that at least three had been injured, two seriously.

Reports from Franceinfo say that two of the people injured are of Ukrainian and Russian origin.

Taking to X, Éric Ciotti, the mayor of Nice which is near to Monaco, released a statement.

He wrote: "The attack committed this evening is a tragedy which has hit Monaco. Thoughts for the victims, their families and the people of Monaco. Total support to the security forces and emergency services responding."

Meanwhile, Charles Ange Ginésy, President of the Departmental Council of the Alpes-Maritimes said on X: "In the face of the attack in Monaco this evening, I express my profound solidarity to the victims, their families and the people of Monaco.

"I also give my support to the security forces and emergency services engaged on the ground."
