All Superquinn supermarkets across the country will be renamed SuperValu by February next year.

According to the Musgrave Group website, the company will be changing the name of its 24 Superquinn stores to SuperValu from February 2014. However, the restructuring of the brands will mean 102 employees at Superquinn’s support office in Lucan will be out of a job.

Commenting on the news, Chris Martin, Musgrave Group CEO, said, “We understand that some customers will be sad to see the Superquinn name change. However, the decision follows a considered review of all options and is an inevitable next step given the realities of a totally changed grocery market and what the Irish consumer now needs.

“As part of the name change, a number of Superquinn’s support functions will be fully integrated with SuperValu. I regret very much that this decision will impact 102 colleagues at Superquinn’s support office in Lucan who will leave the business over the next eighteen months.”

The more pressing issue on some people’s lips will be whether or not the food that has made Superquinn a favourite among Irish consumers will remain the same – mainly their sausages and doughnuts.

Thankfully, Superquinn’s PR team were on Twitter today putting people’s minds at ease…
