The new ferry service launches on Friday.

A new ferry service linking County Louth and County Down will come into effect on Friday.

Having been discussed for more than five decades, a new ferry will operate on Carlingford Lough for the first time, with the aim of the project to boost tourism and the economy both north and south of the border.

Over €10m was spent on the project, which connects the existing port of Greenore in Louth with a newly-built landing at Greencastle in Co Down.

According to RTÉ, there will be capacity for 44 vehicles and their passengers and has been established by a Shannon-based company, which already operates services in Passage East and across Lough Foyle between Derry and Donegal.

It is hoped that more than 100,000 passengers will use the service in its first year in operation.
