Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley considering bid to buy Clerys

The store shut its doors on O’Connell Street last June.

Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct is reportedly looking at buying the iconic former Clerys building on O’Connell Street in Dublin as part of an Irish expansion.

Neither the company nor its legal representatives would confirm their interest in the Clerys building when contacted by The Irish Times.

Cheyne Capital, which owns 80% of Natrium – the company that paid €29m for Clerys last summer just hours before shutting the store down – declined to comment on rumoured plans to turn the building into a major retail area, employing 1,700 people.

According to the Times, Cheyne is dissatisfied with the level of bad publicity around Natrium’s purchase of Clerys, leaving the way open for Sports Direct to make a bid.

Ashley’s company already own 50% of Heaton, which has over 60 shops in Ireland, and plans to buy the remaining shares for €47.5m.
