Nicola Coughlan might have just shared ‘Ireland’s best-kept secret’ with the Brits

Chatting with presenter Nick Grimshaw and Michelin-starred chef Angela Hartnett on the Dish Podcast, the Derry Girls star recalled a hilarious story about how the Irish website RIP.ie became her go-to resource.

Nicola recollected how she used to work at an optician's in Galway and encountered some rather awkward moments when trying to schedule a follow-up appointment without realising the person had passed away.

Nicola explained: "That happened to be enough times that I was like, I can't do this anymore. I need to figure out a system.

"So, in Ireland, there's a website, it's my mum's favourite website. It's called Rip.ie"

"It's the death notices," she said, adding that Britain could really use a similar website.

"What I started to do was, if I saw someone's date of birth that was a little bit further into the past, I would go, 'I'm going to put them into RIP.ie', so I'd pop in their details, and then if they had passed away, I would print the page, and I would staple it onto the thing and I'd put it in the back office," she explained.

Nicola went on to say that the optician she worked for had a lot of nuns as patients.

"So you'd be like Sister Ignatious, born 1932, and I started then in my head, guessing if people were dead," Nicola said.

"I was like, 1932, I don't expect [her to be still alive], and I type them into RIP.ie, Ignatious... dadada, and they were always alive. Nuns are immortal."

Listeners at home were just as much in stitches with her story as Nick and Angela, with one person writing: "Already want her back to tell more."

"This is the most Irish thing ever," another declared, while a third added, "OMG! This is hilarious!"

"Have I googled RIP.ie, Yes, I have," added someone else.
