Some changes are on the way.

Nightclubs are expected to be permitted to reopen using Digital Covid Certificates under the government’s new reopening plan.

It’s unclear what other measures are expected to be required for nightclub reopening, aside from Digital Covid Certificates, but it’s expected some of the measures may include a greater focus on ventilation as well as social distancing (although it’s unclear how this will work in a nightclub setting).

In order for this to move forward, the Government must lift the existing curfew on night-time hospitality with a decision expected on this later today (Tuesday, 19 October).

While Friday was due to mark the end of most restrictions in Ireland, it now looks likely that some restrictions will remain in place due to the increasing pressure on the hospital system in Ireland.

NPHET has advised that existing restrictions on hospitality should stay in place for several months with a decision expected to be made by the Government on whether to continue to enforce basic measures like mask wearing, social distancing and Covid Certs in hospitality settings for the foreseeable.

While there’s been no confirmation, indications ahead of the cabinet meeting suggest there may be an increase to the number of people allowed to attend weddings and religious ceremonies.

Other plans to tackle the pandemic include using antigen tests on close contacts and booster vaccines for over 60s.

It’s also expected that sporting events in stadiums will return to full capacity from Friday, provided the event is outdoor.
