South Dublin residents concerned nude beach signs will be a “magnet for exhibitionists”

Three large signs are to be erected in the area.

The next meeting of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council is to deal with the complaints from at least 40 residents living around the area in relation to nude bathing at a beach in south county Dublin.

The Irish Naturist Association has already welcomed the planned signs, having lobbied the council earlier in the year to put them up, as the bathing area at Hawk Cliff is known for being a naturist-friendly bathing area.

However, a recent letter to the Dalkey Newsletter sent by a local resident said the beach was a public amenity and “shouldn’t be hijacked by a few”.

Additionally, with three large signs set to be put up at the Hawk Cliff bathing area in Dalkey warning the public they may encounter nude bathers, residents told RTE News that they are worried that the signs will make the area a “magnet for exhibitionists” and say the publicity around the signage has already led to “lewd acts within view of residents’ homes”.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown councillor Michael Merrigan has previously stated that “The beach is out of the way, secluded, one can maybe see bits of it if you’re taking the Dart, but that’s it. This is a bit of a storm in a teacup.”
