There were over 2,000 Covid-19 cases in hospital at one point in January.

The number of people in hospital with Covid-19 in Ireland has fallen to below 200 for the first time since last December.

As of 8pm on Tuesday night (13 April), there were 189 confirmed Covid-19 cases in Irish hospitals, according to the HSE’s daily operations update.

The hospital site caring for the most patients is currently Beaumont Hospital in Dublin with 24.

The Mater and St James’s are also both looking after 20 patients with Covid-19.

The HSE’s daily operations update also reveals that as of 6.30pm last night, there were 47 confirmed Covid-19 cases in critical care, along with seven suspected cases.

27 of these cases in ICU are being ventilated.

The last time the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in hospital was below 200 was 16 December, before a Covid-19 third wave surge impacted Ireland.

Just over a month later on 18 January, Covid-19 cases in Irish hospitals had reached their all-time peak at 2,020.

Speaking over the weekend on the falling number of people in hospital with Covid-19, HSE CEO Paul Reid said: “We could be on a good trend with the early benefits of the vaccines reducing the sickness levels for the most vulnerable.

“The light is shining a little brighter for now.”
