Pat Hickey, former president of the Olympic Council of Ireland, has been transferred to Bangu Prison in Rio as he faces charges of being involved in illegally reselling tickets to the Olympic Games.

He has had an application for bail denied.

Hickey was questioned overnight in Rio after being discharged from hospital, where he had been held since his arrest after suffering from chest pains.

He was initially driven to the Carlos Eboli Criminal Institute in Rio, where he answered questions for several hours, and hid from photographers as he was then transferred to Bangu Prison via a procession centre at Police City, according to RTÉ.

Hickey is reportedly sharing a cell with one other person at the maximum security jail, which currently houses 396 out of a top population of 532.

According to JOE reporter Joe Harrington in Rio, the 71-year-old Hickey has had his head shaved and is not being granted any special privileges.

Kevin Mallon, director of international sports hospitality company THG Sports, is being held at the same prison having been arrested on 5 August.
