The 28-year-old made a distressed call to his girlfriend before being reported as missing.

Paul Shine Dixon, a father-of-three from Finglas, was reported missing in May 2009 when he was traveling from Amsterdam to Barcelona.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is aware of the case and is offering consular assistance.

He had been travelling around Europe, and was on his way to the city to meet his girlfriend, when he got off the train at Perpignan in the south of France.

According to RTE News, he made a distressed call to his partner saying that he had witnessed a shooting and that he would call her again soon afterward.

His last known sighting was when he discharged himself from a local medical centre.

His family has been informed that his body was discovered buried beside a canal in Perpignan.
