The rules for Irish drivers could be changing.
A new set of rules for fining Irish motorists breaking the law is set to be discussed by the Cabinet today.
Under new proposals proposed by Minister for Transport Shane Ross, drivers will be given automatic penalty points and an €80 fine if they are pulled over and do not have their driving licence to hand, according to the Irish Times.
At present, if a driver is stopped by a member of the Gardaí, a Garda has the discretion to ask the person concerned to visit a station with their licence by a fixed period of time.
If these new laws are introduced, this power of discretion would be removed.
The same report also states that Minister Ross has a new plan to deal with the issue of speeding on Irish roads.
He proposes that anyone who is caught driving 10 kilometres per hour over the speed limit would receive two penalty points and an €80 fine.
Elsewhere, anyone that’s driving 20 kilometres over the limit would get four points added and an €150 fine and those found to be 30 kilometres over the speed limit would get six points and a €200 fine.
