Pic: An amazing shot of the moon taken in Salthill in the early hours of this morning

That was definitely worth getting out of bed for.

The last few days have been particularly exciting for stargazers in this neck of the woods; the International Space Station was visible overhead at the weekend and this morning, there were certain parts of the country where, if you were up early enough, you could catch a particularly spectacular sight of the moon on a day when some folk in North and South America will have been lucky enough to see a total lunar eclipse.

Photographer Gavin Kelly was up at the crack of dawn – 5am to be exact – in Galway this morning and the crankiness and bad case of bed-head that no doubt came about because of his early start ended up being well worth it as he managed to snap a truly spectacular shot of the moon at Blackrock on the Salthill prom, where the famous diving pier is located.

Gavin was good enough to send the photo our way and added that he tried to take a photo at the spot where you can just about make out another early-rising photographer (on the far right of the photo above) to try and get a nice reflection off the water but it was too late by the time he got up to him.

Not to worry Gavin, the first shot you took is pretty spectacular as it is.

Breath-taking stuff.

Thanks to Gavin Kelly for sending this one our way. You can check out more of Gavin’s work on his Facebook page.
