So it looks as if the Middle East have raced into a handsome lead against Canada in Loughrea today, though neither it could be said are a hurling stronghold.

The novel pairing is just one of the more unusual fixtures that will take place as part of the International Hurling Festival that is taking place in Galway at the moment.

Hurlers from the USA, South America, Canada, the UK, Continental Europe, the Middle East and Australia will take to the field over the three day tournament which takes place Loughrea, Gort, Athenry and Galway City.

Loughrea is hosting Milwaukee, Canada, Middle East and Europe, and two of those sides were battling it out today and with a healthy lead of 1-04 to 0-01 over Canada as the picture below shows.

The qualifying games will take place today and tomorrow, with the final taking place on Saturday in Pearse Stadium.
