Pic: County Down with this sort of thing. Cemetery sign in Down changed after causing grave offence

A road sign in County Down has been changed by a local council as it created the mistaken perception that a local cemetery was doubling up as a Household Recycling centre. No, really.

Confusing road signs in Ireland are so common that they are an almost accepted part of the landscape. Often you’ll find two signs in the same spot pointing towards the same location with a different distance on each one, or, quite amusingly, you’ll find that existing signs have been given a very Irish makeover with a little touch of graffiti, as was the case with this beaut in Tipperary.

We don’t think we’ve ever seen anything like the sign that stands, or used to stand, in County Down, however, that would have given the perception to passers-by that a cemetery near the town of Comber was not just a cemetery, but also doubled up as the local household recycling centre.

Considering what’s contained in a cemetery, it’s just a touch morbid to have an association with a recycling centre and according to the BBC, it has since been amended to what you see below after a Stormont assembly member complained that it was “highly inappropriate”.

The Ards Borough Council later apologised “for any upset the error has caused”.

Commenting on the positioning of the new signs, UKIP assembly member David McNarry said: “I think the council have acted responsibly and fair play to them – it was totally insensitive.

“A couple of wags had been saying, ‘if they don’t bury you, they’ll recycle you’, but people were sensitive about it.

“It was something that just needed a bit more care and attention – somebody just didn’t think, but it’s important to have respect.”
