Pic: Hats off to the Irish Sun for their brilliant front-page headline this morning

Give that sub-editor a rise, a promotion or just a big, hearty pat on the back quick; this is brilliant.

Give that sub-editor a rise, a promotion or just a big, hearty pat on the back quick; this is brilliant.

As we well know given some of our lousier efforts in the past, writing a great headline can be a tricky balancing act. You need to take a bit of a risk to come up with something that’s that bit different from everyone else, but try and be too clever and you risk complicating matters and making a fool of yourself.

The Irish Sun have got it spot on with the headline on the front page of today’s edition in relation to the refusal of Angela Kerins, chief executive of Irish charity Rehab, to disclose her salary in light of damning revelations that almost €4 million worth of lottery scratch cards sold in 2010 returned a profit of less than €10,000.

The paper in question has attracted attention for the wrong reasons in the past and isn’t always the most popular amongst readers in Ireland and beyond but credit where it’s due to the sub-editor in this case; this really is top notch stuff.
