Pic: Irishman captures amazing photo of shark and surfer off the coast of Kerry

You’re gonna need a bigger surfboard…

There’s a shark in the water!

JOE reader Stephen Lynott (who describes himself as being “just like Usain Bolt. Except not fast”) sent us in the incredible image you see below. It’s a brilliant picture he snapped which captured a large basking shark approaching an unassuming Irish surfer off the coast of South Kerry, an area that the photographer had spotted sharks swimming in before, but admits that it’s rare to see them this close to shore.

We contacted Stephen who, it turns out, actually knows both the surfer and shark in question. He went on to inform us that “the surfer is called Niall Hogan and I’ve christened the shark Finbarr O Muircheartaigh.”

Finbarr. A handy name to scream when you’re getting completely eaten alive by horrifying monsters from the deep. FINBARRRRGGHH!

And no, before you say anything, the shark’s fin is NOT that giant rocky formation visible in the background. Smartarse.

Thanks to surfer/shark-snapper Stephen Lynott for sending this in via Twitter.
