If we ever owned a seagull, we'd call him Steven.

If we ever owned a seagull, we’d call him Steven.

The world of horse racing is no stranger to weird finishes but the end of the 7.10 Daily Racing Markets At starspreads.com Fillies’ Handicap at Brighton on Tuesday night has to be a first.

As Jewelled, the ultimate winner, and second-place horse Sagesse went for the line, a winged interloper swooped in to take second spot.

Racecourse spokesman George Hill told the BBC: “We are about a mile and a half from the sea, and there are a lot of seagulls around, but this has never happened before as far as we are aware.

“The bird just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”

It is just a pity that the bird didn’t make his burst for glory in the next race, won by a horse called Byrd In Hand.
