As you do…

Great and all as smartphones are for browsing the internet, for the ability to download great apps, for social media interaction and such, there is no doubting that our level of obsession with them borders on the extreme at times.

The thought of losing, or of irreparably damaging, the precious piece of technology was too much to bear for a 16-year old lady in Kent, who went to great lengths in order to recover her Blackberry after it fell out of her pocket and, to her horror, straight down a storm drain.

The lady in question, Ella Birchenough, then jumped down the drain in an effort to grab hold of the phone with her feet and toe it to safety, a valiant effort that ended up being completely in vain as not only was her phone broken, but she got stuck and had to be rescued by firefighters shortly afterwards.

Describing her ordeal, Ella told KentOnline: “I was talking to somebody and I went to put my phone in my pocket and it fell down the drain.

“I thought to myself, ‘I’m not leaving this’ and I jumped down to get it. I wasn’t really even stuck, I just needed somebody to help lift me out but my mum got all panicky.

“When they pulled me out I ran straight home and jumped in the bath. I think it was just water but I wasn’t taking any chances.”

Ella seems calm about it now but the withdrawal symptoms will no doubt kick in fairly quickly. That’s when the sh*t will really hit the phone.
