He’s heartbroken.

A swan in Wexford has been left brokenhearted after its mate was killed.

Traffic in Enniscorthy was brought to a standstill on Friday after the swan roamed onto the road and stopped cars while mourning the death of its mate.

Photos emerged of the swan ‘hugging’ cars on the road.

Wexford Society Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (WSPCA) posted the image, taken by Marie Hayes Photography, on social media on Friday, along with a plea for anyone with information on how to help the swan to come forward.

They said: “Would anyone out there know how we can help this poor swan, it’s mate has been killed but now he’s stopping cars and just lying on them and he looks so sad and lonely. Any information would be appreciated.”

However, in a follow up, they announced that they’d contacted a wildlife rehabilitator to try and help the swan.

“We contacted Dal Donoher who is a Wildlife Rehabilitator and he has taken the Swan to Kildare to access him and hopefully release him into another colony,” said the WSPCA.

“Thanks to everybody that commented and left suggestions on how to deal with the Swan. We’ll update again when we have more news.”

Swans are one of the few birds who mate for life, with couples raising cygnets together and learning from their mistakes each time. While they generally stay together all their lives once they bond, there are some occasions when they’ll take new partners, such as if they’ve a failed nesting season or if one of the pair dies.
