“We really didn’t expect that one would cause so much offence.”

An English flag that had been flying in Blackrock Village, Louth, was destroyed last night.

The flag had been raised by the village’s Tidy Town’s committee ahead of Saturday morning’s Rugby World Cup final, where England face off against South Africa.

Flags of both teams were destroyed, as were the flagpoles. Photographs from the scene appear to to show that the England flag had been burned.

The Tidy Towns committee issued a statement on the matter this morning, saying: “We’ve been flying the flags of finalists in the football and rugby world cup for many years on the promenade. We really didn’t expect that one would cause so much offence.”

The group also shared photos of the damage online.

Blackrock won the honour of being named Ireland’s tidiest small town in 2019.
