Gardaí in Meath are currently conducting an investigation into poachers in the area after a deer was found shot and decapitated.

The animal was discovered on protected lands near Slane according to An Garda Síochána’s Meath Crime Prevention Facebook page.

The photos show the animal lying in a pool of its own blood with its head missing.

Another deer was also shot but still alive when Gardaí arrived at the scene. It was subsequently put down.

A small light coloured van was seen acting suspiciously in the area and Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Gardaí have said: “If you have spotted gunmen shooting from their vans or jeeps along the road or using a lamp at night-time to shoot deer, this is illegal please contact Slane Garda Station on 041-9824202.”
