PICS: Ireland will be getting a new 1916-themed €2 coin as of today

Colm Boohig

This will be the first ever custom designed €2 coin in Ireland.

Take a closer look at those €2 coins, because from today they will have a special design to mark 100 years since the 1916 Easter Rising.

It is the first ever commemorative €2 coin in the country, and 4.5 million of them will be rolled out by the Central Bank today.

Emmet Mullins is responsible for the new look, after his design, based on the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, saw off 52 other hopefuls from home and abroad.

Speaking about the new introduction, Paul Molumby, Director of Currency and Facilities Management at the Bank said:

“The design reflects back to the GPO and its association with the Easter Rising and the reading of the Proclamation.

“We are working with the banks, An Post, and the cash in transit companies to get the coin into circulation as soon as possible.

“Members of the public can expect to see the coins in the coming weeks as they come into general circulation.”

Additionally, people will be able to purchase special items to commemorate the centenary. These include:

  • €2 Proof quality cased coin
  • 2016 proof quality nine coin set
  • 2016 Annual mint set containing the nine 2016 dated coins and a commemorative booklet
  • €2 Uncirculated coin card
