This rare phenomenon, called an inversion, happens only a handful of times every decade.
On Friday, the Grand Canyon was the scene of a very special event where the entire thing is filled with fog.
Called a ‘temperature inversion’, air that is higher up is usually cooler but occasionally it stays warm and traps a layer of cold air below it. This leads to fog building up in the canyon but rarely, about once or twice a decade, does it occur to such an extent on such a clear sunny day.
The pictures, posted on the Grand Canyon’s Facebook page show just how fantastic it looks when it happens.
